Title
Exploring the background of sow mortality in Danish herds
Research area and project description
Mortality in sows is a major and increasing welfare challenge in Danish pig herds. We are seeking a dedicated PhD student with a keen interest in pathology to join our endeavour in understanding reasons behind the high sow mortality. The Ph.D. position is available from 1st June or as soon as possible.
Previous and ongoing studies indicate that organ torsions, and especially liver lobe torsions, are important causes of mortality in Danish sows. Currently, we do not know why these torsions occur, but according to the literature, behavior of sows around feeding and the feed uptake itself seem to play a role. The aim of the PhD project is to elucidate factors that affect the occurrence of organ torsions. We expect these factors to be related to the behavior of the sows, but other elements like anatomy or feeding management may also play a role. Due to the explorative nature of the project, we are looking for a candidate with an open and curious mindset who has the ability to work independently and without an already fixed agenda.
The project's methodology involves pathological examinations, making it essential that you possess a master's degree in veterinary science and an interest in doing necropsies and histopathological examinations. Furthermore, elements like e.g. sow behavior could play a role in the project, but the dedicated candidate will have great opportunities in shaping the directions of the project depending on the results we obtain along the way. The project can be tailored to align with your interests, and we welcome creative ideas that can enhance our understanding of this unexplored area.
