Title:
Anti-inflammatory and antioxidative diet interactions on gut health

Research area and project description:
There are several mechanisms by which fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidant enzymes can influence oxidative stress, inflammation, and immune responses. However, interventions targeted at ameliorating oxidative stress and/or inflammation in relation to enteric infections in pigs have been few. The overall aim of this project is to investigate nutritional interventions based on fatty acids, micronutrients, and other feed additives to mitigate oxidative distress and inflammation in pigs during the post weaning period. The hypothesis is nutritional interventions targeted control of oxidative stress and inflammation can mitigate oxidative distress and inflammation in pigs, and thereby will mimic the risk of impaired gut health and diarrhea in the pigs. Pigs are given different experimental dietary treatments and challenged with bacteria (E. Coli). During the experimental period, pigs will be sampled (blood, feces) on individual basis, and various biomarkers of antioxidant status and oxidative distress, and inflammation will be assessed and connected with in depth studies on the gut microbiome, and various gut health indicators. The PhD project will result in the understanding of mechanisms of controlling oxidative distress and inflammation, and the link to potentially reducing the susceptibility to enteric infection.

This PhD project is part of the international research project, PIG-PARADIGM (Link: PIG-PARADIGM, an AMR (antimicrobial resistance) research project (au.dk), funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, and will be carried out in collaboration with other scientists from the project. The project is entitled ‘Preventing infection in the gut of developing piglets - and thus antimicrobial resistance - by disentangling the interface of diet, the host and the gastrointestinal microbiome.
