Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences, Aarhus University, invites highly qualified applicants for a position as associate professor in biomarkers for physiological status and diseases in livestock, horses and pets from 1 March 2024 or soon thereafter.
The position
We seek a candidate with knowledge in the use of a range of analytical methods for studying biomarkers to describe physiological and immunological status, subclinical and clinical disease and impaired welfare. The matrix used in the analysis could be e.g., full blood, plasma, serum, urine, milk, tissue homogenates and faeces. The position therefore comprises all aspects of metabolism in a wide range of animals, including both ruminant and monogastric species, horses and pets.
The candidate must have a solid understanding of physiological and immunological biomarkers, and how they relate to physiological and pathological status, metabolic disorders, animal health and welfare, and nutritional status and metabolism. The candidate should have a strong interest in developing analytical methods for new biomarkers for use in diagnostics and management and use this knowledge in cooperation with veterinarians and animal scientists in order to prevent physiological or immunological imbalances in animals.
The candidate should have a strong background in biochemistry and preferably in combination with a background within veterinary and animal sciences. The candidate should be acquainted with the interdisciplinary principles of sustainability in animal production.
Research, teaching and supervising veterinary and animal science students will be the main focus. In addition, you may provide public sector consultancy, mainly for The Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries of Denmark, within your area of expertise.
The candidate
Qualifications for the associate professor level at Aarhus University must include postdoctoral training or similar with a relevant research profile and a strong scientific publication record in one or more of the areas of the position as described above. This includes that you:
- Have an MSc and PhD in biochemistry, veterinary science, animal science, pharmacy etc.
- Have experience from leading and participating in interdisciplinary research projects.
- Have expertise in a variety of analytical techniques used in relation to quantifying physiological or immunological biomarkers in different animals and in different matrices. The candidate is expected to maintain and carry on the existing laboratory procedures mainly using spectrophotometry, enzymatic-fluorometric and immune chemical methods.
- Have expertise in developing and validating new analytical assays for biomarkers in different matrices and preferably related to diagnostics of diseases.
- The following will also be considered assets: demonstrated ability to produce publications and conduct independent research, ability to take a leadership role within a small research team, student mentorship experience, and strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Who we are
The mission of ANIVET is to perform basic, strategic as well as applied research and innovation within the department’s core activities: nutrition, health and welfare. The activities make up the science-based foundation of ANIVET’s teaching, public sector consultancy and collaboration with business and industry. The successful applicant will be placed in the research unit Ruminant Nutrition but will work across all relevant research units.

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Formalities and salary range
Technical Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
