Applicants are invited for a PhD fellowship/scholarship at Graduate School of Technical Sciences, Aarhus University, Denmark, within the Agroecology programme. The position is available from 01 January 2024 or later.
Title
PhD in Quantifying and Modelling Carbon Sequestration and Stability in Soils based on land use and management
Research area and project description
Increasing carbon sequestration by soils through improved land management has been promoted as a tool for mitigating climate change. However it is unknown how different land use and management practices affect the amount of carbon sequestered by soils, how stable this carbon is to ensure long-term carbon removal from the atmosphere, and which management practices and climate change drivers pose the greatest risks to the sequestered carbon.
The aim of this PhD is to assess the extend of carbon sequestered and its stability under different land use and management practices, and to develop a framework for monitoring and reporting changes in soil organic carbon in dependence of land use. The study involves field experiments and data compilation from different sources to validate and refine process-based models. These modelswill be used to quantify carbon sequestration potentials across different scales and predict the effect of changing climatic conditions on the long-term carbon removal. The ultimate aim is to identify best management options for maintaining or even increasing soil carbon stocks under climate change conditions.
Project description. For technical reasons, you must upload a project description. Please simply copy the project description above and upload it as a PDF in the application.
