The Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences invites applications for three positions as associate professors and tenure track assistant professors in pig herd health, animal diagnostics and disease management, and anthropology of human animal relations. The positions are to be employed at 1 May 2024 or soon thereafter, and all positions are within the research section Management and Modelling.

The research section Management and Modelling develops methods and tools for herd management to promote animal welfare, green transitions, and economic viability for a sustainable future. Further, the section integrates, develops, and disseminates knowledge of farm animal management and relationships between actors and animals. Researchers in the section teach BSc, MSc and PhDs in animal and veterinary sciences educations and conduct research-based public advise for authorities on animal welfare and health.

The research section is a dynamic multidisciplinary research group including animal scientists, veterinarians, economists, statisticians, and anthropologists.
 

The positions

We seek:

  • An associate professor in pig herd health.
  • A tenure track assistant professor in animal diagnostics and disease management.
  • A tenure track assistant professor in anthropology of human animal relations.
  

Your profile as associate professor

You are established as a prominent researcher within your specific field of research, and you possess:
  • The ability to carry out independent and well-organized research work, as well as work as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Documented teaching qualifications at a high international level. 
  • Experience with project management

You are a skilled researcher with a solid background within your specific field of research, and you possess: 
  • Documented research qualifications at a high international level
  • Teaching and supervision experience

Research tasks



The main focus of the position for pig herd health:

  • Preventive medicine in pig herds with a particular focus on reducing antimicrobial usage and mortality.
  • Develop and evaluate methods for veterinary diagnostics in pig herds and in the laboratory.
  • Develop methods for assessing health related indicators for pig welfare at herd level.
  • Contribute to the integration of qualitative methods as part of One-Welfare and One-Health related research.
 

   The main focus of the position for animal diagnostics and disease
    management:


  • Evaluating and applying methods for improved diagnostics in animals.
  • Developing and evaluating tools for pig disease management. A particular focus will be on interactions between diseases, feeding, nutrition and production.
 

The main focus of the position for anthropology of human animal relations:

  • Study relations between humans and animals using anthropological approaches. 
  • Conduct studies on actors in relation to animal welfare and prudent use of antibiotics in animal production.
  • Investigate and develop methods for inspection of compliance with rules and regulations for animal welfare, food safety, and medicinal usage for animals.
  • Study relations between veterinary professionals, clients, and their animals in a veterinary context.
 

All three positions will in addition have to:

  • Take responsibility for teaching and supervision of students at the BSc, MSc and PhD levels with a particular focus on veterinary degrees.
  • Provide research-based consultancy to authorities.  
The preferred candidates are expected to join and develop ongoing research within the research group Management and Modelling. Collaboration with farmers, farming industry, veterinarians and authorities is part of the assignment.

Technical Sciences Tenure Track

Highly qualified candidates are appointed as Assistant Professors for a period of six years with the prospect of performance- based advancement to a tenured Associate Professorship.

The aim of the Technical Sciences Tenure Track Programme is to:

As part of the tenure track position, the candidate is offered:

As part of the Aarhus University Tenure Track Programme, the University carries out a mid-way evaluation to review the progress of the tenure track candidate after three years, according to the same criteria used in the final tenure review. The final tenure review is conducted after five and a half years. If the review is positive, the candidate will be offered a tenured position as Associate Professor at Aarhus University.

Application procedure

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

 

Letter of reference

We strongly recommend that you make an agreement with the person in question before you enter the referee’s contact information, and that you ensure that the referee has enough time to write the letter of reference before the application deadline.

Formalities and salary range

Technical Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
